5 EV Charging Tips to Trim Electricity Bills in the New Year

If you own an EV, you likely already know that you can save money by charging it at home. However, you may not know that there are ways to maximize your savings when doing so. To help, here are five tips to help you trim your EV charging energy bills in the new year.

1. Install a More Efficient EV Charger

The simplest way to cut your home EV charging costs is to upgrade to a more efficient charger. An ENERGY STAR-certified charger, for example, will use up to 40% less energy while in standby mode. Also, higher-amperage chargers reduce energy losses during charging.

2. Target an 80% Charge

Make a point to charge your EV at home to 80%, unless you need the additional range. That’s approximately the point at which most EVs limit charging speeds to protect their batteries. The reason they do that is that electrical resistance inside a lithium-ion battery climbs as it nears capacity. Slower charging is less efficient, so it’s best to avoid it. Many EVs even let you set a maximum charging capacity, making it easy to cap your home charging.

3. Exploit Time-of-Use Rates

If your electricity provider offers them, you should consider switching to time-of-use electricity rates. Typically, those provide steep discounts for using electricity during periods of low demand. In most cases, that translates to cheaper electricity early in the morning, overnight, and on weekends. Since you likely charge your EV overnight, time-of-use rates can significantly reduce your charging costs. Just be sure to do your other energy-intensive tasks like laundry during off-peak times.

4. Consider Rooftop Solar

If you’re able to install it, a rooftop solar power system can be the perfect complement to your EV. Generating power at home can reduce your demand on the electrical grid. If you size your solar power system to accommodate your EV’s needs, you can all but eliminate charging costs. If you purchase a two-way charger, you can even turn your EV into a handy backup power source for your home.

5. Use Free Public Chargers Whenever Possible

You’ll find most public chargers in busy shopping areas, where store owners use them to attract well-heeled customers. If you make it a point to use those chargers whenever you’re nearby, you can substantially reduce your home charging costs. To use this strategy, you may need a public EV charging locator app. Some EV charging networks also offer limited free charging capabilities when you sign up for an account.
