Stay Safe This Winter by Following a Few Smart Lighting Tips

As you cozy up inside anticipating a good book or a family movie night this winter, you’ll need more indoor light than during other times of the year. The need for more light can become hazardous if there is a problem with the lighting fixtures or electrical outlets. To prevent potentially dangerous situations, periodically check for these things:

  • Flickering lights
  • Anything broken on or around light fixtures
  • A burning smell
  • Frayed or damaged wires
  • Buzzing sounds
  • Scorching on the lighting fixtures
  • Sparks coming from a light switch
  • A light switch that feels warm (unless it’s a dimmer switch)
  • A light doesn’t turn on
  • Other electrical issues

To prevent these or other problems from occurring with the lights in your house, follow some smart safety tips.

Be Cautious When Using Extension Cords

It’s easy to overload extension cords, which can cause a fire hazard. When using extension cords, adhere to basic safety precautions. Only use them when necessary, and never overload an extension cord beyond its capacity. Don’t run an extension cord underneath carpet, and never cut or in any way alter an extension cord. Remember to unplug the extension cord when it’s not in use.

Make Sure You Are Using the Correct Outlet

You may not know this, but there are several types of outlets. Homes come with 15-amp and 20-amp electrical outlets, but you may need something different. For example, you may need a ground fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI outlet if you get shocked when you turn on the lights.

Always Use the Proper Wattage

Never go over the recommended wattage when replacing bulbs in lighting fixtures. Too much wattage can cause overheating.

Switch to LED Lights

LED lights use less energy than incandescent lights. They also produce less heat, last longer, are stronger, and are safer than incandescent lights.

Practice Regular Lighting Maintenance

Periodically check for signs of wear and tear on lighting fixtures, plugs, outlets, wires, cords, and extension cords. Replace bulbs when they start to flicker or dim. Ensure all the bulbs are the right type for the lighting fixture, and regularly schedule professional maintenance with an electrician.

I called first thing in the morning for a major issue. The guys were out that afternoon and went above and beyond to get it done in a professional and efficient manner. Both the guys out in the field and the ladies in the office were friendly, professional and helpful. Rush electric really helped to make a tough and unexpected situation a little easier to deal with.
